SP2.1.5 A Systematic Review of Bariatric Surgery in Patients with Obesity and Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus

Abstract Background The prevalence of obesity in the T1DM population has been increasing at a worrying rate. Bariatric surgery proven to be effective treating patients with T2DM, as weight changes had direct effect on insulin resistance and requirements, thus glycaemic control. However, evidence for benefit procedure is still limited, demonstrating need systematic review investigating this. Methods A was performed accordance PRISMA guidelines. Articles not relation or lacking specific quantitative data were deemed unsuitable excluded. Results 26 studies included total 262 (F=167, M=73, N/A=22). mean age 37.08 years (n=207). BMI 112.4kg (n=157) 31.88 kg/m2 (24–58.9, n=261) respectively. Most common procedures SG 120 (46%) followed by RYGB 104 (39.3%). Insulin requirements changed from 90.77 IU/day (36.2–174) pre-operatively 36.5 (5–75) post-operatively. No significant trend found HbA1c levels. Main side effects episodes hypoglycaemia DKA; mortality reported any article. %EWL 72.3% (60–90.5%) ≥6 follow up months. Reductions co-morbidities such hypertension CVD recorded multiple studies.
